Computer Lab Activity: Analyzing and Creating Healthy Vegetarian Meals (From NY Times Learning Blogs)
- Become familiar with what it means to be a vegetarian.
- Work with a partner to identify what a healthy vegetarian's diet looks like.
- Create a fictional character and write down the gender, height, weight and age.
- Plan a day's worth of vegetarian meals and snacks for him/her.
- Research the nutritional guidelines for vegetarian children; Look at some nutrition requirements for vegetarians; and find additional Nutrition Tips for vegetarians
- Identify and List several nutrients based on your research that vegetarians need to consider.
- Return to your fictional character and use the USDA Dietary Reference Calculator to determine the daily recommended quantity of the nutrients you selected. Is your character eating well?
- Look up the nutrient content of the Menu you have chosen using the U.S.D.A. nutrient database and compare them with the daily recommendations you calculated.
